Are Gen Z Employees Taking Sick Days For Mental Health Issues?

A survey claims that 40 percent of Gen Z workers have taken at least one sick day for mental health reasons in the past year, a significantly higher rate compared to older generations.

This trend reflects a broader shift in how younger employees view and prioritize mental health in the workplace, with Gen Z being more open about their mental health struggles and more willing to take time off to address them.

The younger generation is also driving changes in workplace culture, pushing for greater recognition of mental health needs and more support from employers. This contrasts with older cohorts, who have historically been less likely to take mental health days and often stigmatized such absences.

The rise in mental health-related time off among Gen Z is seen as a response to increased stressors such as economic pressures, societal challenges, and the lingering effects of the pandemic, alongside greater awareness and reduced stigma around mental health issues.

We do not require an employee to provide a reason for taking PTO. We just ask that they provide notice. This eliminates the hassle and expense related to taking time off from work…and decreases employment practices exposure.
