Need To Adapt Your Workplace Culture? Start With Your Mission And Vision Statements

A survey conducted by JLL found that 24 percent of healthcare workers are considering leaving their current positions within a year.

Among those, 10 percent are contemplating leaving the healthcare field entirely, either to switch professions (six percent) or to retire (four percent).

The survey highlights key factors influencing these decisions, including pay and benefits, workplace culture, and job location.

According to the source:

Culture is a significant factor for Gen Zers entering the workforce for the first time, according to survey results. Those individuals were born between 1997 and 2010.

"Young people are still exploring career possibilities and want to work for an organization that they can feel good about working for. As they become more established in their career, company culture ranks as a lower priority," JLL reported.

Workplace culture often plays an important role in whether employees choose to stay or quit, according to the survey findings. https://www.mcknightsseniorliving.com/news/24-percent-of-healthcare-workers-expect-to-leave-their-jobs-within-a-year-survey-finds/ (Oct. 17, 2024).

Indeed.com, a hiring site, defines culture as:

Workplace culture refers to the collection of attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and values that characterize the regular atmosphere in a work environment. It encompasses how employees interact with each other, the policies and practices of the organization, and the overall work environment. A positive workplace culture aligns employee behaviors and company policies with the overall goals of the company while considering the well-being of individuals. https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/career-development/work-culture (Aug. 18, 2024).

In other words - you define and enforce your workplace culture. Defining your culture starts with your mission and vision statements.

A mission statement is about the present. A vision statement is about the future.

To attract and retain workplace participants, including Gen Z participants, healthcare organizations must develop and shape both statements to reflect the current culture.

For example, it is common for organizations to mention safety in a mission statement - something like "ABC Health wants to provide a safe workplace for its employees". A decade or more ago, "safety" in the workplace was centered primarily on physical safety and exclusively for employees.

Today, safety also includes emotional safety - safety from harassment or bullying, and there are many types of participants in the workplace who need to feel safe, including contractors and volunteers. So, a meaningful change to the example provided above would be: "ABC Health wants to provide all contributors a workplace safe from physical and emotional harms" or some equivalent.

The takeaway is that as the workplace changes and as those who interact with it change, organizations must continue to define and reshape their mission and vision statements.
